I’m Richard Gemmell. I’m a professional software engineer with an interest in driving and
Daniel Sendula introduced me to PiWars in 2018. I’m fascinated by the problem of controlling
an autonomous vehicle so I found PiWars very appealing. Daniel convinced me to join
the GCC team for 2019. He already had a design in mind
for the rover so I decided to create a positioning system.
I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to determine the position and speed of the rover
from an IMU. I didn’t get it to
work but I did manage to get excellent results from the gyroscope. The rover never knew where
it was, but it always knew where it was pointing!
I’ve decided to build a rover for myself. I’ve never built one before so the theme of the rover
is “go back to square one and learn the basics.” That’s why the rover is called “Square One” and
that’s what this blog is about.
